Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa returned from NSW camp to star in a 48-10 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters and secure his side's sixth win in a row.

The Dolphins leapfrogged the Roosters into fourth position and confirmed their credentials as premiership contenders in front of 20,687 fans at Lang Park on Friday night.

The Roosters lost debutant centre Reece Foley and five-eighth Hugo Savala to head knocks in the first half. The visitors trailed 12-0 at halftime before the Dolphins put their foot down with six second-half tries.

Both sides were heavily impacted by State of Origin commitments with the Roosters losing seven to NSW and Queensland. Five Dolphins are in camp in Melbourne with the Maroons.

Katoa, who had been on standby for Blues playmaker Miitchell Moses during the week, had his fingerprints all over the win.

His halves partner Kodi Nikorima was also superb, showcasing why he deserves an extension beyond 2026.

The Roosters started full of venom but had a try disallowed to rampaging forward Salesi Foketi for a double movement.

Dolphins co-captain Katoa stepped up with a subtle dummy to deceive opposite number Daly Cherry-Evans to open the scoring.

Dolphins points-scoring whiz Jamayne Isaako, who injured a hand in the final play of the game, converted to equal Canterbury legend Steve Gearin's all-time premiership record by scoring in his 94th consecutive match.

The kamikaze running of pocket rocket fullback Trai Fuller got the Dolphins roaring up field to start a set that finished with a try out wide to centre Herbie Farnworth, his sixth of the season.

The Roosters lost Foley and Savala in rapid succession to head knocks, both while trying to tackle Isaako.

Roosters debutant winger Rex Bassingthwaighte, just 19, looked every bit the talent he has been touted as with a try, dynamic bursts and all-round nice touches.

The Dolphins started the second half superbly with Katoa and Nikorima combining. Second-rower Oryn Keely split the defence to send Fuller in for his first try of the year.

Katoa's inch-perfect chip for Nikorima to score his 50th NRL try was scintillating. Hooker Jeremy Marshall-King barged over from close range, Farnworth split the defence to send second-rower Connelly Lemuelu over and winger Tevita Naufahu's kick inside for utility Brad Schneider was a pearler.

Naufahu's 100m chase to deny Roosters fullback Cody Ramsey a try revealed the Dolphins' resolve in defence.

The loss of Savala meant the Roosters had a third debutant in the match with playmaker Toby Rodwell, 20, coming on in the second half and scoring a try to showcase his class.

Press conference: Dolphins

By Nick Campton

Phins coach Kristian Woolf is speaking now.

"I liked all of it. They came with a great intensity at the start and we had to handle it and I thought we did that," Woolf said.

"Our defence was outstanding, we gave them two tries they didn't deserve and I don't mean that disrespectfully."

Woolf has special praise for winger Tevita Naufahu's cover tackle on Cody Ramsey.

"It was the biggest play of the game for me. It was 34-4 and he could have given up on that and let it be a try," Woolf said.

"But that's what we want to be about."

Woolf also praises Isaiya Katoa and cites the confidence he would have gotten from training with New South Wales.

"He was outstanding. I'm really proud he was in Blues camp, he knows he's on the cusp of it and he gets some confidence out of that and he played like it tonight."

Says they're trying to work something out with Kodi Nikorima, who is off-contract at the end of the season.

Press conference: Sydney Roosters

By Nick Campton

Roosters coach Trent Robinson thought his side did well to adapt in the first half but after the break they lost the ruck before being broken open by individual moments.

"It was one play that could have been better for us on multiple occasions," Robinson said.

"I felt like the spirit was really high. You could see how hard they were working for each other.

"But I expected more from the leaders out there, to control things a bit better."

He won't use the missing players as an excuse and wraps the two young rookies who scored.

"I thought they were great. Rexy was giving away a bit of weight there but he would have been involved a lot," Robinson said.

"He's constantly asking questions and looking for it. Toby, he's such a good young player.

"He's a nice footy player. It was so great to see that."

75' Dolphins get one more

By Nick Campton

One more to finish for the Queenslanders, they spread it right again and easily strip them for numbers for Naufahu to go over in the corner.

Isaako from touch...he nails it. Phins up, 48-10.

71' Another Rooster debutant goes over

By Nick Campton

Rodwell, who's had some really nice touches since coming on, spins out of a tackle, gets through, reaches out and scores!

Another Roosters rookie gets over and he kicks the goal to boot. Dolphins 42-10.

66' Ramsey nearly goes the length

By Nick Campton

Farnworth kicks for himself, Ramsey just manages to clean it up and deny him and he takes off downfield, he's in the clear and off for the corner, Naufahu is the only one chasing and he JUST gets him before Ramsey can make the corner.

Some effort from both men.

64' Another long-range Dolphins try

By Nick Campton

Another Dolphins try and it's another dazzler. They spread it down their right deep in their own half, Naufahu gets in the clear, he banana kicks it back inside and Schneider is backing up to score.

Man, that was pretty flash and looked absolutely effortless. Isaako converts and it's 42-4 Dolphins.

63' Roosters nearly get another

By Nick Campton

Rodwell puts Crichton away, he's into space and tries to draw Fuller but his pass to Tupou is a shocker, it's around the ankles and he manages to regather but the defence takes him over the sideline.

61' Roosters rookie gets a consolation score

By Nick Campton

Naufahu lets a bomb bounce, it lands for Bassingthwaight and the rookie is over....but we go up with "no try."

They say it hit Smith's hand but replays prove it didn't. This will be a try - well in, kid.

A rare bright spot on a tough night for the Chooks. Rodwell misses from touch, it's 36-4 Dolphins.

57' Lemuelu goes in for Dolphins' sixth try

By Nick Campton

More of the same for the Dolphins, Farnworth pulls though eaily after Leniu is caught on the edge, he has Lemuelu in support and the backrower cruises the last 20 metres to score.

A half-century is on here if the Dolphins want it. Isaako makes no mistake and it's 36-0.

54' JMK goes in as Dolphins score again

By Nick Campton

It's a penalty on Tupou for tackling Bostock in the air, it's a late call and a bad one for mine - Bostock just got higher than him and it put him into Tupou's space.

Anyway, Phins on the attack again....and Marshall-King goes over up the middle, easy as you like, right under the posts.

Isaako converts and it's 30-0. With the way the Phins can attack this could get very ugly.

50' More magic for Katoa and Nikorima

By Nick Campton

Crichton loses the ball on his own 30 and the Dolphins have the chance to add another.

Katoa kicks early for Nikorima and the little five-eighth is there to score! Beautiful set play, both halves have worked so well together tonight.

Katoa converts and it's a big lead now at 24-0.

46' Fuller strikes from fullback

By Nick Campton

Katoa and Nikorima link to put Keeley through a gap, he has Fuller in support and the Dolphins are in for their third try of the night.

Excellent work from the two halves, Katoa really froze them. Isaako converts and it's 18-0 Dolphins.

Injury update: Hugo Savala

By Nick Campton

The Roosters five-eighth has failed his HIA and he's done for the night. Watson switches to five-eighth, but Toby Rodwell is on the bench and could be activated.

Halftime: Dolphins 12 lead Roosters 0

By Nick Campton

Donoghoe loses the ball with a few seconds left and that will do us for the first half....wait, the Roosters pack the scrum with one second remaining.

They'll have one play to do something crazy, Ramsey goes for a field goal from 53 metres out AND I TELLL YOU WHAT.....no, it just falls short!

Geez he gave that  a whack, for a second I thought it had a chance.

Fri 12 Jun 2026 at 8:44pm

38' Roosters just hang on

By Nick Campton

A high tackle on Farnworth helps the Dolphins out of their own end.

Katoa puts Stone through a gap, he rumbles downfield and gets tackled. Next play they spread it right but Talau manages to snag the intercept and save the day.

Fri 12 Jun 2026 at 8:42pm

34' Roosters can't get over

By Nick Campton

Despite two full sets on the Dolphins' line the Roosters can't get over. The home side works it away after Katoa cleans up Cherry-Evans' kick.

Injury: Hugo Savala

By Nick Campton

Another Rooster is off for an HIA and again it's after a big run from Isaako. Savala fell awkwardly after his head hit Isaako's shoulder and the independent doctor intervenes.
