A good book can be truly transcendent, whisking you away to far-off unfamiliar worlds or immersing you in your own neighbourhood.
Some books become synonymous with their setting: think Brisbane and Trent Dalton's Boy Swallows Universe or Far North Queensland and Alexis Wright's Carpentaria.
With ABC Radio National set to count down the Top 100 Australian Books later this year (voting opens August 31), we've been mulling over homegrown classics from across the decades.
Australian wordsmiths of the likes of Charmian Clift, Tim Winton and Melina Marchetta have a flair for conjuring a powerful sense of place, and not always within our nation's borders.
