'Notorious' Gold Coast frontman for offshore shell companies faces extradition to US

A Queensland jet ski salesman who helped set up offshore shell companies embroiled in scandals involving Mexican drug cartels and North Korean arms dealers is facing extradition to the United States on money laundering charges.
After years of evading consequences for his side hustle selling secrecy through shell companies, Ian Taylor was arrested last month by the AFP at an acreage property where his family lives on the Gold Coast.
His arrest is a "significant moment", according to Gerard Ryle, the director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), who has been reporting on Mr Taylor and his father, Geoffrey Taylor, since 2011.
"For almost two decades, companies linked to the Taylor family have come up time and time again in criminal investigations around the world, including one that was then the biggest money laundering operation in US history,"Mr Ryle said.

Their shell companies, under the control of third parties, have also been linked to other nefarious activities, including arms dealing and have featured in high-profile data leaks to the ICIJ, including the Panama Papers and the FinCen files.
While there is nothing illegal about setting up or using shell companies, these financial vehicles have long been popular with criminals wanting to hide ownership and avoid law enforcement, often through nominee or "dummy" directors, making it difficult to know who is really behind the company.
Ian Taylor and his family members, including current and former partners, as well as friends, associates and residents of tax-haven countries, have served as directors for the shell companies.
He has previously maintained he has done nothing wrong and was not responsible for, or aware of, the activities of the companies he helped set up.
"So far, that argument has held," Mr Ryle said.
The 49-year-old is now in custody in Queensland awaiting an international extradition hearing later this year.
The Attorney-General's Department confirmed to the ABC that Mr Taylor is "wanted to face prosecution in the US for offences related to money laundering".
His lawyer, Tam Elabbasi, confirmed that his client was facing three charges.
The maximum penalty for each offence is 20 years behind bars.
The US Department of Justice declined to comment.
'The glory days'

Mr Taylor was living a quiet, country life with his young family on an idyllic property out the back of the Gold Coast when he was arrested by federal police late last month.
It has been six years since his name was last in the public spotlight when his business activities were exposed in the FinCen Files data leaks in 2020.
Since then, he has vented his frustration at the media attention on his public Facebook page, calling one reporter a "scumbag" and "dodgy as" in between sharing happy snaps of his travels around the world with his wife and children.
Last year, Mr Taylor shared a link to an ABC story that detailed a report by US authorities, which described him as "a notorious company registration agent that created companies for organised crime, rogue states".

"Kind of miss the glory days with media chasing lies," he lamented in an accompanying comment.
Mr Ryle said Mr Taylor had long argued he had done nothing illegal.
However, Mr Ryle said those setting up offshore shell companies were able to exploit a flaw in the system that helped people evade responsibility.
"Shell companies are very attractive to criminals because they provide cover and all-important secrecy," Mr Ryle said.
"You can add to that secrecy through complex arrangements in multiple jurisdictions because it is harder for law enforcement to investigate when multiple jurisdictions are involved.
"At least up to now, authorities have been unable to do much to stop this kind of behaviour."
In 2009, one of the shell companies Mr Taylor and his father helped set up was used to lease a plane to fly from North Korea to Iran.
When it stopped to refuel, authorities found 30 tonnes of explosives and components for surface-to-air missiles on board, in breach of international sanctions.
At the time, Ian Taylor confirmed his family business, called GT Group, had set up the shell company and supplied nominee directors and shareholders, but said that GT Group was simply "not responsible for the operation or activities of companies that it has incorporated".
The following year, there was another major international scandal, when more companies set up by GT group were implicated in a multi-billion-dollar money laundering investigation into a US bank.
Wachovia Bank was fined $US160 million ($224 million) in 2010 for helping to disguise the illegal origins of up to $US378 billion ($528 billion) for Mexican drug lords.
"During the court proceedings, it was alleged that four New Zealand firms registered by the GT Group, which was run by the Taylors … helped launder about AU$40 million of this money," Mr Ryle said.
Ian Taylor is due to face Southport Magistrates Court in August when more details of the allegations against him are expected to be revealed.
His lawyer, Tam Elabbasi, told the ABC they were "focusing on the task at hand, being the extradition application, before taking further instructions from Mr Taylor with respect to defending any charges or allegations".
If the extradition application is successful, Mr Taylor will then face charges in the US.
