Extreme heat during the FIFA Club World Cup made for a troubling preview of what is to come.

In short: 

Ten of the 16 North America 2026 World Cup venues are at very high risk of experiencing extreme heat stress according to a new report called Pitches in Peril. 

According to the report, 14 of the 16 World Cup stadiums in the US, Canada and Mexico exceeded safe-play thresholds in 2025.

What's next? 

The 96-page report urges the soccer industry to commit to net-zero by 2040 and publish credible decarbonisation plans.
